On the 1 January this year, Croatia officially joined the Eurozone – replacing their local currency, the kuna, with the euro.

The move comes 10 years after Croatia became part of the European Union. The kuna was only accepted as a payment method until 15 January, but it can be exchanged for euros in any banks until the end of the year.

If you are travelling to Croatia on holiday this year, you will be exchanging your pounds for euros. That’s the easy part with TravelFX. The hard part is deciding where to go.

Croatia has pristine and deserted beaches, picturesque historic cities, eight national parks to explore, more than 1,000 islands scattered around the Adriatic Sea. There are breweries, sleepy traditional villages, galleries, museums and street markets. There truly is something for everyone.

Zagreb

Zagreb is Croatia’s biggest city. With its warm spring, pleasant autumns and summers that are not too hot, there isn’t really a bad time to visit this beautiful city. There are two old towns, a fairytale-like cathedral, many museums and art galleries, forests to hike in and a lake to swim in.

Vis

Vis is renowned for its beaches, particularly after they were made famous by the cast of Mama Mia, Here we Go Again. Imagine clear, turquoise waters and hidden coves and you have the beaches of Vis.

Split

Split is excellent place to start any island getaways. It is one of Croatia’s three most popular tourist spots. The cobblestoned town is built around remains of Roman ruins. It is where many people go if they want to get to the other popular islands of Brac, Hvar and Vis.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a perfectly preserved medieval city, surrounded by a 2km long city wall. The beautiful historic old town, with many Game of Thrones filming locations, is packed with lively bars and excellent restaurants. There are churches, monasteries, and museums to visit. It has pebbly beaches from where you can take a boat ride to the nearby Lokrum island. It is one of Croatia’s most visited locations.

Plitvice Lakes

The utterly beautiful Plitvice Lakes became a national park in 1949 and was named a World Heritage Site in 1979. The set of 16 interconnected and perfectly clear lakes, 90 waterfalls and countless cascades is captivating for every visitor. This stunning spot is definitely worth a visit. It is set in the inland region of Lika.

Rovinj

It is said that Rovinj is the most romantic town in Croatia and should be on everyone’s travel itinerary. It has beautiful narrow, cobbled streets and stunning piazzas.

Pag

For most of the year Pag is deserted. But come mid-June, the party starts. Zrce beach is one of Croatia’s most famous party spots where many beautiful people can be found sipping cocktails. It is often described as the Croatian Ibiza. Spend the mornings lazing on the beach recovering from the night before, then the fun starts at 4pm.
